My first experience playing with graphic design came in high school
making banners in Printshop and watching my dot matrix printer slowly scratch out the pages
one perforated sheet at a time.
At first, I used the ready-made templates.
But before long, I was creating my own original designs.
Even then, I loved the alchemy of combining words and images
to create something meaningful.
I didn’t have the language for it at the time,
but now I recognize that impulse as the beginning of a lifelong practice:
turning inner truths into outer form
Creating not just to communicate…
but to connect.
With myself.
With others.
With the Mystery.
In so many seasons of my life,
creativity has been my companion through pain.
Songs, poems, collages, and zines
have all been ways to transmute confusion into clarity,
anguish into art.
Each creation is a trail marker
recording my progress,
revealing my process,
helping me make meaning out of moments that once felt too big to hold.
But it hasn’t always been about catharsis or deep processing.
Sometimes it’s just about joyful exploration.
Creative play carries its own medicine.
A color that delights me.
A scribble that makes me giggle.
Cutting and pasting just because it feels good.
All of it supports the healing process.
Not by avoiding the hard parts,
but by restoring my capacity to meet them.
When Unfurlia was conceived,
I was so excited to craft the visual elements of a brand
that reflects what I’m learning about healing, expression, and living a nourished life.
Where my creativity feels integrated with my calling.
Where art, words, and design all serve the deeper work I’m here to offer.
Unfurlia is a love letter to simplicity, spaciousness, and slow unfolding.
It holds the promise of evolving into a business that feels like home.
Rooted in rhythm.
Where rest is not a reward for productivity,
but part of the sacred cycle of making.
And yet
even within this gentle unfolding
there are moments when inspiration grabs me by the heart and won’t let go.
A restless joy takes over.
A creative hunger that drives me to shape what’s stirring
into something I can share.
To translate the essence of Unfurlia into words and images.
It’s a hunger I want to feed.
This is no new appetite.
Inspiration has always found me
through scraps and sparks, images and instincts.
One of the ways I’ve fed that fire
is by crafting found poetry.
My process involves ripping a page out of a magazine,
cutting out all the words,
and then rearranging them into a poem.
This is pure play
rooted in the joy of discovery,
the satisfying click of unexpected meaning.
In 2023, I created a zine series called Seek + Find
featuring found poetry that explores the themes of
identity, consciousness, suffering, healing, and ultimately,
the freedom to flourish.
These tiny handmade booklets blend this spontaneous language
with collage and design
to form pocket-sized expressions that somehow reflect
whatever I’m thinking, feeling, or learning at the time.
Issue #12 is called Noisy Craving
and celebrates the wild creative impulse that refuses to be ignored.
This is exactly what’s moving through me today
as I keep shaping the story of Unfurlia.
I recognize that same restless energy.
That same ache to give form to feeling.
That same invitation to follow delight.
Unfurlia is still revealing itself to me,
one phrase,
one image,
one breath at a time.
I’m simply following the breadcrumbs of beauty, intuition, and play
trusting that this craving to create
is its own kind of compass.
